It's separated from the mainland by a narrow strip of water called Ports Creek. Once upon a time, this was a fairly wide channel, wide enough and deep enough for barges and boats. Now it is just about 25 yards across and when the tide is out, there's only a trickle, but it's still water and we're still an island!<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center;\">And there is an island mentality. Portsmouth people are proud. Yes, our city has problems and yes, it is diverse and extreme in its demographic. However, we all have the sea in our blood, it is a massive part of our life.
